Day 65
Saturday 9th of January 2016
Up early to head to our bus pick up point to the four thousand Islands. Brought breakfast at the guest house we arranged pick up from only to have the bus turn up 10mins early. Regardless we managed to shove the rest of our bread rolls in our mouths and jump in the mini bus.
Slept most of the way to the small four thousand Island port on an uneventful, but limited leg room trip.
Jumped on a small fishing/transport boat to Don Det. This section of the island had a slightly seedy feeling to it thanks to the marijuana tourists, but a short walk lead us to a nice quiet bungalow on the banks of the Mekong.
After dropping off our bags (much to the surprise of the bungalow owner who asked where our luggage was) we hired some bikes for $1.50 and headed along the coast. The bikes had no gears and travelled with the speed of a shopping cart.
Crossed the old colonial bridge to Don Khon where we saw the impressive Mekong waterfall, a sort of cross between a waterfall and rapids.
After lunch (which took an hour after ordering to arrive) we took a boat ride to see the Irrawaddy dolphins. It was a very scenic trip and we did indeed see dolphins. You only see glimpses of them as they breach but still worth the trip.
Afterwards we road home to lounge in a hammock and grab dinner riverside.
The restaurant owner stopped talking to me in English once she found out I was learning Lao.
Photos on Monday or so.
